Sexual transmission accounted for nearly 82 percent of HIV/AIDS cases in China, with more than 52 percent being heterosexual transmission, and nearly 30 percent being homosexual transmission.

According to an annual statistical report about the modes of HIV transmission, the proportion of sexual transmission continues to expand. Its proportion had been nearly 12 percent from 1985 to 2005 and reached more than 42 percent in 200.

Sexual transmission has become the main mode of HIV transmission. The proportion was nearly 56 percent in 2009, but shot up to 75 percent during the period lasting from January to October in 2011, with 13 percent being homosexual transmission and 62 percent being heterosexual transmission.

Wu said that it is estimated that the proportion of AIDS patients to those infected through sexual transmission stands at nearly 64 percent, with nearly 47 percent being heterosexual transmission and over 17 percent being homosexual transmission.
